The MCM Student Lounge Empty
PostSubject: The MCM Student Lounge   The MCM Student Lounge EmptySun Jan 11, 2009 12:19 pm

Jay (one of the many derivatives of JLeeBly's nickname) made his way down the hallway, a full satchel of books slung over his back. Class had been overly tedious today, seeing as how he had been through the majority of the same classes prior to the first phase of the invasion and his relocation. Credit hours tend not to transfer when your former school is overrun by the living dead.

Past the classrooms and before the offices, the Malton College of Medicine Student Lounge provided a small area of reprieve for those who were mentally weary from classes, wanted to grab a bite to eat though not brave the cafeteria lines, or liked to study someplace with a little noise. Jay typically came to clear his mind with conversation. Whether it was idle chit-chat, commiserating about classes, or providing a little bit of tutoring, Jay enjoyed human interaction and sharing his gift of helping others.

Jay had little trouble finding a chair in the scarcely populated room. Jay propped his feet up, closed his eyes, and leaned his head back with a sigh. "Friday couldn't come any sooner."

William Schneider ran down the hallway, the new coffee maker he had found for the lounge clutched in his arms. Dashing inside the room, he stopped in front of a counter and reverently placed it in the place of the old, plugging it into the outlet. His mission completed, he dropped to his knees and raised his hands to the sky, as if he'd completed an ancient ritual for some pagan god. Suddenly remembering where he was, he suddenly stood up and looked around. Noticing Jay, he waved and manged to get out "Hey there Jay, I finally found a new cof-," before his dog Talleyrand bounded into the lounge and strait into William, sending them both into a heap on the floor. "Jeeze, boy, try to contain your enthusiasm," he said with a grin. Setting the coffee maker, he watched to make sure it started making another pot before taking Talleyrand and sitting down on one of the couches. "So," he said, looking over at Jay. "How're you doing?"

Jay and the others in the lounge couldn't help but to notice the commotion caused at the doorway as William burst in the room, his dog following directly. "A coffee maker," Jay thought to himself, "all of that over a coffee maker. I don't even like coffee. Gotta hand it to him though, he found one and didn't try to pawn the damn thing for ammo or something."

"Hey Will." Jay replied as Schneider and his dog settled in. "Doing well for a Monday. I'm about tired of hearing about the skeletal system, you know? The thing about anatomy... it doesn't get any more exciting the third time you take it."

Jay searched his bag for a moment before retrieving a zipped bag of jerky from its depths. After tossing a piece to the now sated Talleyrand, Jay proffered the bag to William. "Want a piece?"

Mere was heading down the hallway when she smelled something... Could it be? Coffee?!? Sniffing the air, she manages to locate the source of the sweet aroma!
Bursting through the door, she spies the coffee pot, perking away on the counter.
"Oh! How wonderful! Who found a coffee pot?!?"
Looking around the room she spots the students. Remembering herself, she straightens up and tries to look proper. "Gentlemen...", she nods at them, "I hope you both are properly prepared for your Revivification class tomorrow. I'm looking forward to reading your reports on identifying appropriate candidates for revivification!"
Realizing she has no business in the student lounge, she walks quickly towards the door.
"Well, then... carry on!"
She hurries out the door and heads towards the cafeteria wondering if there is instant coffee available there.

The slamming of the door open once again shocked Jay back to attention. It was Ms. Bystander, professor of revivification and resident coffee-phile; she no doubt smelled the new coffee pot percolating. Ms. Bystander's reminder pertaining to the Revivification paper shook Jay for a moment, "Have I written that yet?"

Jay's sometimes horrible memory was compensated for by his desire to finish assignments as soon as he heard about them. Every approaching deadline was always met with a moment of horror followed by the relief that it had already been completed -- this was again the case as Jay checked his binder to find the verbose report he had written on Revivification. Just as Jay started to realize that adding information about the pharmacokinetics and alternate injection sites for Necrotech's wonder-drug might have been overkill for this report, he noticed William still appeared to be dazed from Ms. Bystander's assignment reminder.

"Will... if you'd like, I could help you out." said Jay.

Will grinned. "Thanks buddy, but no need, I got it all done nice and early." Most likely unknown to Jay, Will had been extremely distracted for a minute or two thinking about how extremely well Proffesor Bystander could smell coffee. It was like she had her olfactory bulbs surgically replaced with those of a bloodhound at some point in her life. Petting Talleyrand and starting to look over the various magazines and newspapers sitting in a small rack next to the couch, he was suddenly startled by someone on the radio repeating a web address over and over. He got up and retuned it, fiddling with the dial and stopped when he heard the familiar voice of Uncle Zeddie coming over the speakers. "Hey, Radio Survivor, would you look at that!" he said, before he sat down and resumed petting Talleyrand.

"Fair enough, Will." Jay said, putting his report back into his MCM bag. As Will scanned through the radio stations, Jay couldn't help but notice that Galaxy News Radio was taking a break from their typical five-song soundtrack to allow the DJ to give some advice to the Malton citizens. That advice had come in handy during the beginning of the third phase, when the living finally began to formulate tactics to thwart the growing threat. For a kid who had only known academia all of his life, it was good to know somebody was looking out for the displaced scholars with barely a practical skill.

After a brief amount of reflection, Jay listened to the radio program, one he had admittedly never heard before... "Uncle Zeddie," he thought, "What a name..."

Mr ShambleFoot wanders along the corridor, sniffing the dying smell of fresh coffee and running his fingertips along the wall enjoying the sensation. It is several weeks since he arrived, and several more days since he awoke on the pavement outside St George's Hospital. His vision was clearing and his senses continued to sharpen though he could still feel the horde in the vicinity.

One of the Staff burst out of a room looking a little flustered, she composes herself and hurries away. After a moment, Shambly fumbles at the door handle with his damaged hands (some things don't get better) and enters the room.

JLeeBly and William Schneider look up from their distractions.

"mmmm .. I wath jutht pathing by and well .. um .. " Shambly looks around awkwardly wondering if or when he will remember how to become a sociable being again.

"Anyway I'm Mr ThambleFoot but you can call me Thambly. I've only been here a thort time but everyone theems motht pleathant."

In a flash of inspiration he offers his hand to JLeeBly.

PostSubject: Re: The MCM Student Lounge   The MCM Student Lounge EmptySat Jan 17, 2009 12:56 am

Jay sat in amazement as Shamblefoot made his way into the room and introduced himself. The social tide had changed over the past years... then again, a lot of things had. Jay's sentiment towards the zombies had ranged from confusion to fear to loathing to pity. Revivification had become a reality, one that Jay had been able to witness quite frequently once he decided to take up arms and make a difference instead of moping about. He knew the theories, the mechanism... he had a paper in his backpack about the subject due in Ms. Bystander's class tomorrow. The books, the writings, the broadcasts, the hearsay... they only explore the "rules"... as a scientist, Jay reveled in the "exceptions to rules." Shamblefoot was a great exception.

Jay had never seen a patient of revivification that had been so... aged. Most of the people Jay had witnessed undergoing the reanimation had very limited damage. Shamblefoot had been around town a few times before he got acquainted with the magic pneumatic needle. Tidbits of information flew through Jay's head as Shamblefoot spoke: "Proximal effects most rapid, very long half-life, yet to fully penetrate the frontal cortex and sulcus..." His train of thought was interrupted when Shamblefoot presented his hand, as if to grasp and shake.

"Oh my... this is going to be weird. Stay calm. He's one of us, too. You've seen worse. You've done worse. Just shake his hand. Nevermind the still-developing ski... oh my that was a maggot, wasn't it? Oh boy... okay... don't vomit. Do... not... vomit. Deep breath. Okay..." Jay's notoriously weak stomach began to remind him that it was still around -- regardless, Jay grabbed Shamblefoot's hand and gave it a hearty shake, despite Jay's sense of touch putting the screws to him.

"Who needs a drink? I need a drink... a big, tall... drink." Jay said to the group as he stood and made his way to the sink.

"That went well..." Jay thought to himself as he washed his hands, splashed a bit of water on his face, and searched for a cup.

Shambly was probably more surprised by his actions than Jay appeared to be. The warm touch of Jays hand and the vigourous handshake that followed vaguely reassured him though. A thought slowly trickled into Shambly's mind as Jay went to the sink beyond his peripheral vision: Perhaps I am more human than my body remembers?

A slow smile creeps across his face, pulling his leathery skin tight across his cheekbones.

Turning to Jay Shambly catches sight of himself in the mirror and realises that it will be some time before he is accepted at MCM. The flash of ivory coloured teeth disappear as he settles back into the implacable and comforting face of the newly re-animated.

Another spark of recognition fires across Shambly's eyes as he sees what he is wearing and realises perhaps he is underdressed.

"Jay why doeth nobodyelth wear tartan thlipperth?"

Jay finally located a stack of plastic cups and weighed his options: coffee or water. Not necessarily an ultimatum, Jay poured himself a glass of water and retook his chair in the lounge.

Shamblefoot's question hit Jay. Ever since moving to Malton, Jay had noticed that some new residents were so shocked by their surroundings, they didn't even have clothes. Because of the limited selection of garments in the city and the common occurrence of seeing human and zed alike in their birthday suit, Jay didn't give much thought to Shamblefoot's slippers.

"Shambly, we've been in a survival situation for years now. Clothing resources have left much to be desired. The fact that you're dressed means a lot. And if you're going to be hanging out in the hospital, you might as well be comfortable." Jay said.

Shambly stood there staring into middle distance as he digested what Jay had told him. "It doesn't matter.."

For some reason he could not understand this seemed to mildly offend Shambly. Looking again at his reflection in the window Shambly saw himself for possibly the first time since the outbreak.

A very slender figure, now predominantly pink again in colour as the various molds and funghi fell away from him. He noticed how his skin was so tight across his joints and his face. No wonder he had a few strange looks since he re-animated. The dressing gown hung limply from his frail frame and the tartan slippers certainly covered his feet though the left slipper was badly worn because of his damaged foot.

"Perhapth I thould wear thomething a little more thuitable..." The idea seemed to grow on him and suddenly a very familiar feeling crept into his mind. Something he had not felt since he had been shambling through the streets of Malton, scavenging and feeding.

"I think i will go to the Mall.... Thank you Jay" Shambly smiles again and turns on his good food and makes his shuffling way back out of the Student Lounge.
